At Every Age

In our youth, the future can look endless. The idea of growing old can have little practical impact. There’s much we can take for granted. We may look at older people with sympathy, but it can be difficult to picture ourselves in their place. But life has a way of changing our perceptions. Regardless of our attitude or lifestyle, we all ultimately face the reality of growing older. As we do, our perspective inevitably changes.

The Psalmist clearly was dealing with these issues. Looking back, he could see God’s hand on his life when he was a young man: “By You I have been sustained from my birth.”

But he felt the vulnerability of growing older: “Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails.” As his human capabilities diminished, he realized that he needed God more than ever.

Reflecting on God’s faithfulness, he realized that He still was with him, as He had been throughout his life, teaching him “from my youth.” His faithfulness was central to his testimony. “Even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come.”

The Bible reminds us that God is with us at every stage. He reminded His people, “You who have been borne by Me from birth and have been carried from the womb.” He promised to be the same “even to your old age,” to bear us “even to your graying years” (Isaiah 46:3-4).

Whatever your age, you can be sure that God is with you. At every stage of your life, He never will abandon you. You always can trust in Him.
