Are You Ready for Action?

Peter’s call to be ready for action reminds us that trials refine us and prepare us to fulfill God’s purpose with clarity, courage, and hope.

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action.”—1 Peter 1:13 NASB

Christians were scattered throughout the Roman Empire. Many faced trials and persecution. Peter encouraged them to remember the importance of preparing their minds for action. Why? Because God had a work for them to do.

Peter reminded them that they should “reside as strangers” (v. 1) on the earth. They were chosen by God, who had given them “a living hope” and prepared for them “an inheritance which is imperishable.” If they were faithful, they would receive rewards that were “reserved in heaven” (vs. 3–5).

Though they were “distressed by various trials,” their trials would last only “for a little while.” In every situation, they were to “greatly rejoice,” for every trial had a purpose: to test them by fire so their character would be refined and impurities would be removed, ultimately making them stronger in Christ (vs. 6–7).

As “aliens and strangers” (1 Peter 2:11), they were to be calm and watchful, self-controlled and clear-headed, focused on obeying God and looking for opportunities to do His will.

Prepare your life for action by knowing God’s Word, being filled with His Spirit, living a holy life, and being faithful to fulfill His call. Remember the blessing you’ll receive in eternity and “set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:13).

Cooperate with God as He refines you. Focus on His Kingdom. Be ready for action!
