George Orwell’s chilling novels instilled powerful images in the minds of the public, particularly his last book, “1984.”

Published in 1949, he wrote about a future when an all-seeing political leader, “Big Brother,” was always watching while “thought Police” sought to control what people thought. A byproduct of powerful governments, the public was brainwashed and engaged in “doublethink.”

Born on this day in 1903 in India as Eric Blair, Orwell later changed his name. He achieved lasting fame in 1944 with the publication of his book “Animal Farm.” Written in the form of a fable, it gave his account of the Russian Revolution, which reflected his own socialist attitudes.

His novels introduced many memorable concepts into general vocabulary. His name spawned the word Orwellian, suggesting the future he described. People have perceived many so-called enemies as “big brothers” in governments, the military, and even private companies.

But the Bible presents an even more chilling portrait of our real, spiritual enemy. This is Satan who prowls the earth like a lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). The Bible also warns of the appearance of “many antichrists.”

Make sure you are alert and on guard, prepared for the many ways Satan and his demons will try to deceive you. He can seem to be harmless and even an agent of good, an “angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). Be a warrior for Jesus, always ready.
