An Account

The Bible is filled with reports-occasions to testify and to share information, documented verbal and written accounts of what has been done. We see the spies reporting about their journey into the Promised Land (Numbers 13). The disciples reported their experiences to Jesus (Luke 10). Paul went back to churches he had established to give an account of his ministry (Acts 15).

The Bible also is filled with records-detailed genealogies and specific assignments by tribe, by family, and by person.

The presence of these reports and records helps us see that God is concerned about what we do and how we spend our lives. He gives each of us opportunities, abilities, resources, and assignments-a specific call and mission.

We need to remember that each of us will give an account to God. The Bible tells us that He keeps a book from which we will be judged according to our deeds (Revelation 20:12). We will report to Him and describe our lives-what we’ve done and why we’ve done it.

As we approach the end of another year and decade, ask God to help you think about your life. Do you have any unconfessed sins? Are you clear about God’s calling on your life? How have you spent your time and resources? Are there things you’ve left undone?

One of the great things about serving God is that He always is ready to give us a new start, forgive our sins, and wipe the slate clean. The Bible tells us that His “lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Today, surrender your life anew to God. Commit your way to Him, and ask Him to direct your steps. Make Jesus the Lord of your life.
