Amazing Gifts of the Spirit

“To each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good . . . and to another prophecy.” 1 Corinthians 12:7-10 NASB

It was something the disciples clearly did not understand. Jesus promised that something amazing would happen after He departed: He promised to send the Holy Spirit to them (John 16:7). And what amazing promises! The Spirit would teach them and guide them. He would fill them with miracle-working power. He would change their lives.

Throughout the New Testament church, we see the Spirit at work, fulfilling everything Jesus had promised. But the same Holy Spirit is still at work. He enables us to experience His fruit. And He imparts gifts that the Body might be whole, healthy, and growing.

One of the many gifts of the Spirit is the manifestation of prophecy. How does a person become a prophet? First, this means being called and chosen by God to deliver His words. For example, the Bible tells how Amos (who was just a sheepherder) was called to be a prophet (Amos 1:1).

Or Jeremiah, whom God called to be a prophet before he was born (Jeremiah 1:5).

Like the other gifts, prophecy still is a vital part of the Church. But we also are instructed to be careful. We are to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). We must be careful to discern which words are from God, for “the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets” (1 Corinthians 14:32).

In your life, think about how amazing it is that God has given you His very Spirit! The same “the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead”! And He dwells in you (Roman 8:11)!

Don’t squelch the Spirit, but be sensitive to His leading. Be available that He might empower you, use you, and even speak through you.

Prayer: Father, help me to hear Your voice. Speak to me. I am available and ready for Your Spirit. Use me in the lives of others. I surrender my time, talent, and treasure to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
