Amazed

For many, this was an overwhelming experience. As they journeyed westward in 1846, members of the U.S. Army had heard reports about what they might see. But no matter what their previous history, they were surprised and overwhelmed by the grandeur of this new land.

The first sight of rugged mountains made them feel like they had entered a new world. One man described how the “jagged peaks are towering in mid-heaven all around us… grand beyond description.”

Many cowboys who joined cattle drives had similar reactions. As author Christopher Knowlton has described, “Nothing quite prepared them for the beauty and scale of the landscape.” This was nature at a “gargantuan scale.” For many, it was a life-changing moment.

Like these men, we might not suspect what awaits us. What more we could see. What more God could reveal to us. How easily we can feel content and satisfied. But everything changes when God opens our minds and helps us understand the scope of His creation. The diversity. The depth. The variety. The beauty. The possibilities.

These can be life-changing moments. When He gives us new eyes to see the world.  When we realize that, no matter what we know, there is more to know. No matter what we have seen, there is more to see. To realize that “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
