Always a Conqueror

We’re reminded that through every trial and hardship, we’re always a conqueror because Christ’s love holds us fast.

“Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or trouble, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? […] In all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”—Romans 8:35–37 NASB

A young immigrant arrived in America in 1915 and soon was drafted into the US Army. Eventually he was sent to Europe, where he served on the frontlines in World War I. Like millions of men, he became a victim—not to bullets, but to the flu epidemic that ravaged military and civilian populations everywhere.

Suffering gravely, he lay among soldiers who had died in combat. His body appeared lifeless, and he was hauled out among the dead. But nurses checking the bodies discovered he was alive! He received medical care, recovered, and returned to America in June 1919.

Throughout the war, this soldier carried a New Testament in his pocket. When the nurses found him, they noticed that his Testament had Romans 8:35–38 highlighted, a passage the soldier had clung to day after day.

He had continued to trust that Jesus still was with him. Nothing could separate him from Christ’s amazing love. In every situation he faced, he would “overwhelmingly conquer.” He would never be separated “from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (vs. 38–39).

These promises were true for that immigrant soldier—and they are true for you. No matter what you’re facing, you can trust your life to God. Nothing can separate you from the love of Christ! You are more than a conqueror!
