All Things Are Possible

He had been one of the premiere musicians of the twentieth century. Born in San Francisco on this day in 1928, Leon Fleisher was a prodigy. Building on his natural gifts, as critics described, he quickly matured, becoming “one of the most brilliant” and “complete pianists of his generation.”

Then suddenly, in 1964, everything changed. He found that two fingers on his right hand involuntarily were curling up. It was discovered that he was suffering from a crippling neurological condition. Functionally losing the use of his right hand, his career as a concert pianist effectively ended.

It was a time he described as “pretty desperate.” His mood was “despairing.” Losing the use of his right hand nearly broke his spirit. But he never gave up. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he continued applying his talents. As a pianist, he played pieces written for the left hand alone. He also studied, conducted orchestras, and taught students.

Then amazingly, in his later years, through a medical procedure, he regained the use of his right hand. Once again, he was able to play with both hands. It was a miracle, and his example became an inspiration to people worldwide.

Today, many people face situations that seem hopeless. Many of them give up and feel that nothing can be done. The Bible provides us with many examples of how nothing is impossible with God. With Him, all things are possible. We’re always to “pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1).

God’s answers can come in many ways. Sometimes the miraculous comes through medical procedures (for people like Leon Fleischer). For others, God may work in supernatural ways.

In your life, don’t give in to despair or hopelessness. Continue to have faith in God. Continue to pray and believe.
