A Unique Relationship

This father loved both of his sons. But he also realized that each had a unique personality, and distinctive potential, strengths, and weaknesses. So he expressed his love differently for each son.

With his younger son, he had to show patience and mercy. To love him, even when he wasted his resources and made bad decisions. When his son returned home, the father reacted with joy and celebration.

But the older son had never rebelled in this way. He seemed to feel that his father favored his younger brother, and didn’t show him adequate appreciation. He seemed bitter over the celebration given for his brother. But he did not realize that the father loved him just as much as his brother. He simply expressed that love in unique ways.

In a similar way, God knows that each of us is different. He has a special plan for each life. He knows and guides us as individuals. He speaks to us and calls us as individuals. And He shows His love in unique ways.

But His love always is patient and kind. “It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” This love “always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” It “never fails,” and is constant in every situation (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

In your life, remember that God has a unique plan just for you. He has given you unique gifts and resources, and blessed you that you might bless others. But also remember these same principles are true for others. God may work differently in their lives and give them different goals.

Seek to be faithful to His call on your life. Be a good steward. Filled with His love.
