A Strange Sight

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries3 Minutes

“The angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.’” Exodus 3:2-3 NIV

Moses was confronted by something beyond his comprehension. It was a “strange” sight. The Hebrew word here usually is translated “great,” as in “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised” (Psalm 48:1).

It would have been easy to focus on this phenomenon. But Moses learned that this “strange sight” was the way in which God got his attention, for it was from this bush that God “called to him.”

Through this encounter Moses learned more about God’s character. The whole area was “holy ground” and the burning bush was a symbol of His nature. Like a fire, He consumed every impurity. Yet He was eternal. Never changing. Speaking words that were eternally true and pure. Through this unforgettable encounter Moses realized the seriousness of his assignment.

In keeping with this moment, the burning bush was beyond “strange.” It was holy, otherworldly, and with eternal significance. It was “great.” For Moses was being called to lead His people out of Egypt and bring them “into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.”

What does it take for God to speak to us? Is it possible that we might experience “strange” things, things beyond our understanding? But Moses’ experience is a reminder that we always need to look to God. To be sensitive to His voice and the message He is trying to communicate to us. But we also need to remember His character. To approach Him with fear and awe, with reverence and worship. To remember that He is holy and that His words are timelessly true. And that He is great.

Prayer: Father, I believe that You are holy, and that Your Word is true. I worship You in Your holiness. Speak to me and guide me. May my life be pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
