A Soldier of the Cross

A Soldier of the Cross

As he prepared a sermon based on 1 Corinthians 16, Isaac Watts was stirred by Paul’s direction to “stand fast” (NKJV). He recognized how critical this commitment was for victory in our Christian lives.

Pondering these truths, Watts was moved to write a hymn called “Am I a Soldier of the Cross?” He sensed that many Christians did not approach life from the perspective of a soldier. As a result, they often lacked discipline and failed to persevere. They simply weren’t prepared or properly trained.

Many didn’t realize what it meant to follow Jesus. Looking at his own life, he asked himself, “Am I a soldier of the cross, a follower of the Lamb, and shall I fear to own His cause, or blush to speak His name?” His hymn encourages believers to realize that the Christian life involves spiritual warfare. They need to be bold, confident, and committed to serve Jesus.

He wrote, “Sure I must fight if I would reign; increase my courage, Lord. I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain, supported by Thy Word.” Like soldiers, we might experience delays or obstacles. We might face distractions. But Watts realized that we need “faith’s discerning eye” to achieve victory.

Today, ask yourself if you have the attitude of a soldier. Don’t run away or expect defeat. Stand firm and don’t compromise. Know that Jesus is with you. Dedicate yourself to His Kingdom. Serve faithfully in His army!
