A Righteous Example

Simeon is unknown to history, except for this brief passage. As far as we know, he was not famous and held no important positions. But the Bible tells us several ways he was different and special.

First, Simeon was “righteous and devout.” He cared about God’s Word and was careful to please Him. “Looking for the consolation of Israel,” he believed that God’s promises were true, that He would send the promised Messiah. God promised specifically that Simeon personally would see “the Lord’s Christ” before he died.

He was concerned for God’s people and eagerly hoped God would ease their burdens and meet their needs. His life was marked by an unusual presence of the Holy Spirit. He was sensitive to the Spirit. Because of this sensitivity, he was ready to hear from God.

As Simeon held the baby Jesus in his arms, he blessed God. He was overwhelmed at His faithfulness. Simeon recognized what Jesus meant for himself and his people. He was the fulfillment of prophecy, the long-awaited Messiah. And Simeon marveled that he had the privilege of seeing and even holding this child who would change the course of history.

In your life, remember the example of Simeon. Seek to be sensitive to the Spirit. Seek to be faithful, a good steward of all the resources God has given you. Seek first His Kingdom. Be ready to respond as He calls.
