A New Year’s Prayer
“For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.”—Psalm 48:14 NIV
Born in 1830, Emma Frances Riggs Campbell was one of eleven children. Her diverse background focused on her literary skills. She was the author of children’s novels, a collection of verse, and a biography of her brother-in-law. But she gained the most impact through the hymns she composed.
Looking into the future, she wrote a clearly named hymn, “A New Year Prayer.” She wrote, “I know not what awaits me along the coming year.” The way forward seemed filled with unknowns, “with no clear guiding light.” She knew she needed God’s help: “I dare not venture one single step alone, lest I in blindness stumble against some hidden stone.”
The path forward was filled with uncertainty. It was “all untrodden, no human footfall yet has left a trace to follow and save our vain regret.” She needed the guidance of God’s hand and was confident in His “higher wisdom.” Without His help, she could be a victim of the many dangers and many kinds of snares that could lead her astray and encourage her to wander.
It was a time to turn to God in trust. Her prayer was that He would remove her doubts, give her childlike assurance, and fill her heart with calm, unwavering love.
As Campbell encourages, we are called to “go forward bravely,” trusting God each step of the way, believing Him for strength and victory.
