A New Start

For the ancient Israelites, the year of Jubilee took place every 50 years. This year was special because mistakes could be wiped out. Regardless of their past, this was to be a time of freedom, release, and celebration. When debts could be forgiven and everyone could start again.

To make sure everyone knew that this year had begun, the trumpets were to blow “loud and long throughout the land” (v. 9). Everyone would want to know that this was the year of Jubilee.

The Jubilee year is an important symbol for Christians today. All of us make mistakes and do things we wish we could do over again. Our lives can be dominated by regret, guilt, and condemnation.

We still may have to experience the consequences of our actions, but God wants us to know that, in His sight, we can be set free. We can start over. Our sins can be forgiven, and our slate can be wiped clean! Like the announcement of the Jubilee year, we need to proclaim this message loudly so everyone knows!

As you get ready to end one year and begin the next, take advantage of this opportunity to have a new beginning in your spiritual life. Do not allow the mistakes of the past to haunt you, or let sin and bad habits keep you from experiencing the joy, blessings, and victory that God has prepared for you.

Confess your sins, and receive His forgiveness. Remember. He has removed your sins “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm103:12 NKJV). Through His grace you can begin again!
