A Message to Ponder

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

“Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.” Luke 2:19 NASB

There were many reactions to the birth of Jesus. Some people were amazed. Some were overwhelmed. But Mary, His mother, could only ponder. The Greek word here was used only six times in the Bible, all by Luke (in his Gospel or Acts). It suggests combining or throwing together. It is often used to describe conversations or conferences, where different points of view are discussed. The sense is that Mary’s mind was filled with thoughts. Perhaps conflicting thoughts. Thoughts thrown together. She was left wondering what it all meant. Reflecting on what had happened. Thinking about the new baby that had been born.

Seeing how others reacted, she must have wondered why she had been chosen for this assignment, and what would happen in the days to come. She must have wondered about God’s purposes, for her and for her son.

For many in the world, the celebration of Christmas seems to have a simple theme. Celebrations and generosity. The giving and receiving of gifts. Shopping and entertainment. Yet Mary’s response reminds us of deeper truths. These are moments for us to stop and cease our labors. To put aside our prejudices and preoccupations, our personal convictions and opinions. To be humbled. To ponder. To come face to face with Jesus.

How do you respond to the birth of Jesus? The world may try to turn His birth into a kind of carnival. A celebration of commercialism and merriment. But stop and ask God to speak to you in a new and fresh way. Think about Jesus. His life. His ministry. His message. His death and resurrection.

Ponder the power of the Gospel and the transformation He offers. How He forgives and heals, even today. Yes, so much to ponder!

Prayer: Father, help me to ponder why You sent Jesus into this world. Give me greater understanding of the truths of the Gospel. Use me for Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
