A Journey of Faith

On this day in 1620, a small congregation of English Separatists, led by John Robinson, left Plymouth, England, on a journey by ship headed for the New World. Today, this historic group of religious refugees has come to be known as “Pilgrims.”

These people gave up everything because of their convictions. They believed that God was calling them to a new land where they could escape persecution and worship Him in freedom.

Can we imagine the fears that they experienced as they crossed the ocean to settle in an unknown land filled with dangers and unknown dangers? It was a journey that required enormous faith. Faith to persevere. Faith to believe God for protection and guidance. And faith that God would bless their efforts.

These Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony, the first permanent English settlement in what became known as New England. The Pilgrims established a government and created the Mayflower Compact, which served as a precursor to constitutional law in America.

Today, we can know the outcome of their journey. But these men and women could not see the future. They had to endure hardships and difficult conditions. Some died. Others suffered with diseases. Yet they persevered.

Each of us, in our own ways, may face situations like these. Times when the doors don’t seem to open. When the obstacles seem too great. When the future seems uncertain. When we easily could give in to doubt, worry, or fear. These are opportunities to renew our relationship with God. To be confident in His guidance. To be sure about His leading. To trust in Him.
