A Great Man’s Miracle

Naaman was called a “great man” and “valiant warrior.” Yet, in spite of his many accomplishments and honors, nothing could change the fact that he was a leper. Then he had hope after learning from a servant girl that the prophet Elisha could cure him.

Desperate to be healed, he followed her suggestion and went to Israel. But instead of seeking Elisha, he approached Israel’s king. Bringing money and a letter from the king of Syria, he assumed that he could buy influence and healing. Seeing what Naaman had brought, Israel’s king tore his clothes. He knew he was powerless to heal.

Naaman then approached Elisha directly. But even though Naaman stood at the prophet’s door, Elisha refused to meet him, just sending a messenger who told Naaman to “wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you.”

To Naaman this made no sense. He thought Elisha would “wave his hand” and heal him. Why wash in the Jordan? Why not the rivers of his native land. Furious, “He turned and went away in a rage.”

But a servant convinced him to change his mind. And when Naaman obeyed, he was healed instantly. He could not influence God with his money or prestige. What moved God was his humility, obedience, and faith.

The Bible tells us that “without faith it is impossible to please Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

The Bible encourages you to believe that God is ready to reward you if you will lay aside pride and not worry what others say, if you will obey Him, act in faith, and trust Him completely. Don’t let anything hold you back. Believe Him for miracles!
