A God of Wonders and Holiness

It was a project that shaped the thoughts of men and women for generations and changed history. This was Encyclopedia, edited by Jean le Rond d’Alembert and Denis Diderot. It began simply as updating an existing encyclopedia, and the first volume was published in 1751. But the work kept expanding and eventually reached 35 volumes with more than 20 million words.

As chief architect, Diderot was on a mission. His ambitious goal was to change the way people thought about the world. He wrote, “All things must be examined, debated, investigated without exception.” He proclaimed the right to “ride roughshod” over any belief and to “overturn the barriers that reason never erected.” Clearly, Diderot targeted Christianity for special criticism. To him, belief in God was the wrong answer.

Diderot became one of history’s most important men, spreading doubt and disbelief. Many today, like Diderot, believe that Christianity is foolish. These doubters simply refuse to believe in God. They reject the Bible and believe that the idea of being a disciple of Jesus is irrational. To them, prayer and worship seem like a waste of time.

Through the years, many people of God have battled with doubt. Think of Moses, for example. There were numerous occasions when he doubted God and struggled to believe. But after the exodus from Egypt, he sang a song that demonstrated his realization of the greatness of our God, who is greater than any force in the universe. His Word really is true!

Today, don’t be dominated by doubt. Don’t be discouraged by the world, but declare your faith in God. There is none like Him—glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders—in the world and in your life!
