Return to God

A Friend Who Never Fails

Jerusalem once was a marvel. As Israel’s capital under King David, it became the centerpiece of his kingdom, displaying its wealth, beauty, and power. The Queen of Sheba had heard so many things about Jerusalem that she had to see it for herself. She was not disappointed. Jerusalem had been “great among the nations.” So admired by “friends” that they became like “lovers.”

But by the time Lamentations was written, everything had changed. No longer was the city “full of people” or considered “great.” She was like a “widow,” abandoned by those who had pledged their love. Former friends had become enemies. Once “a princess,” she was being treated like “a forced laborer,” with no one to comfort her.

The actions of these former “friends” revealed their real motivation. Their commitment had been shallow and superficial. They were willing to abandon her when it was convenient.

God’s people (in history and today) have always needed to understand the nature of human commitment. Just like Jerusalem in ancient times, others may say they are our friends when it is convenient. But they also can forget that commitment.

The Bible is full of examples of moments when God’s people felt abandoned. David described this feeling when he wrote, “Even my close friend in whom I trusted … has lifted up his heel against me” (Psalm 41:9).

This is why we need to commit ourselves to God, for He loves us without condition. He never will abandon us.  Even if we make mistakes and go our own way, He always is ready to welcome us back, and restore us. If we return to Him.
