A Covenant with God

The Mayflower Compact is a foundational document for American history. The “compact” was signed on this day in 1620. It was the first governmental agreement written by colonists in the New World and was signed by 41 passengers of the ship, the Mayflower, as it anchored off the coast of modern-day Massachusetts.

This covenant revealed the group’s goals and why they had risked their lives on such a dangerous journey. They acknowledged that they had traveled across the ocean in this vessel “for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith.” Theirs was a covenant not only with each other, but also with God.

Their statement of intent was signed “solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, and one of another.” Because of their example, the people of America can claim a heritage based on a covenant relationship with each other and with God Himself!

The Bible teaches that covenants are important to God. In Genesis 6, He made a covenant with Noah. Later, He made covenants with Abraham and with others. In each situation, God gave His word, but the fulfillment of His promises depended on the actions of those with whom He had made the covenant. To receive the promised benefits, they had to do their part.

God’s promises still are true. He has promised His people health and protection, wisdom and guidance, power and strength, grace and peace. But we must keep our part of the covenant we have with Him. We must obey His Word and be faithful to Him.

Today, pray for your country, that there might be renewed obedience to God and reverence for His Word. And in your own life, make sure to obey God and faithfully follow His Word. Remember: He wants you to have a covenant relationship with Him!
