As a farmer, I defy anyone who thinks they can successfully farm without faith. A farmer puts seeds into the ground, but it is only God that can make the seeds germinate and grow. It’s a matter of faith — as is everything in our lives.
James 1:6-8 instructs us to ask the Lord for wisdom, but then it adds: “Let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
James is emphasizing that we should ask in faith and not question. When we leave a back door open, that is not faith. I have learned in my walk with God over the last 35 years that when we ask in faith, we need to thank the Lord in advance for what He is going to do. Instead of being anxious, we find God’s peace when we make our requests known to Him “with thanksgiving” (Philippians 4:6-7).
So here’s a simple formula for getting your prayers answered by God:
Find out His will for the circumstances you find yourself in (1 John 5:14-15).
Pray the prayer of faith, based on His will and His promises (Mark 11:22-24).
Go ahead and start thanking Him for sending you the answer (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Ending a Drought
Several years ago, the Holy Spirit impressed upon me to go to the Western part of our beloved South Africa and call the people together to pray for rain. That area had been experiencing a devastating drought for years. I made an outrageous announcement in the local newspapers, telling people to bring their umbrellas to the prayer meeting, because it was going to rain.
In other words, I burnt my bridges. The back door was no longer open, and there was no way out except to believe God for rain. I did not say I hoped it would rain, I said it positively was going to rain. You see, God answers the prayer of faith, but not the prayer of presumption or just “hoping so.”
The prayer meeting was organized within a couple of days, but people came by the thousands! There is nothing like hardship to bring people together to pray. Since that day of prayer by faith, God has blessed that area tremendously. An agronomist said they expected the second largest crop of corn that they’ve had in the last 30 years! The growing season started off as a disaster, but because of that prayer, God turned the tide.
I praise God for His faithfulness. In these Last Days, when things are getting darker and harder, the Lord is looking for men and women with a greater capacity to believe Him, stand on His Word, and take bold steps of faith.
