Recognize discouragement as a season, not a permanent condition.
Although we’ve all been discouraged at one time or another, there’s no need to be stuck. Circumstances, moods, and emotions change continually. Just as moments of intense joy don’t last forever, your moments of discouragement are destined to pass.
Change to a more positive focus.
Your perspective changes when you follow Paul’s instructions in Philippians 4:8: “Whatever things are true…noble…just…pure…lovely…of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” Also, make sure you aren’t dwelling on past mistakes and failures: “This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind…” (Philippians 3:13).
Align every area of your life to the known will of God.
Make sure you’re completely submitted in action and attitude to God’s authority over your life. Rejecting His laws or His will, whether intentionally or unintentionally, always brings about a harvest of discouragement. Ask the Lord to forgive any major decisions when you ignored His will. And when you find yourself in a season of discouragement, keep doing what He told you last until He reveals new direction for your future.
Spend time each day alone with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said the Holy Spirit would be your Helper…Comforter…Advocate…Counselor…and Strengthener (John 14:26 AMP). He is closer than your next breath, ready to come to your aid and lead you.
