The Days of Your Youth

Although born in Spain, George Santayana gained international prominence while teaching philosophy at Harvard University in the U.S. from 1889–1912. Although Spanish was his first language, he became skilled in English, writing often-praised fiction and nonfiction.

An avid student of history, he is best remembered today for saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” While Santayana often is praised for this insight, he simply was echoing a Biblical truth.

For example, God encouraged Israel to “remember the days of your youth.” This humbling action points us back to a time when we were young and inexperienced, not knowing how the future would unfold. Remembering our youth also reminds us to think about the end of our lives, when we once again will be “naked and bare.”

In our earthly lives, we may have different incomes and lifestyles, but it can help keep our lives in perspective to realize what Job learned: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return” (Job 1:21). We share this fate with all other human beings, of every race, nation, and background.

As we remember the days of our youth, we can look back and see God’s hand in our lives. We can recall all that we have been given, and give thanks for all the ways in which He has blessed us and met our needs. Remembering our past is also a wonderful way to guard against pride or self-centeredness.

Today, spend a few minutes remembering the days of your youth. Think about all that God has done for you. Use this as an opportunity to thank Him and praise Him for His faithfulness. Commit your ways to Him, confident that you can place your trust in Him!
