Your Heavenly Father

In many ways, Joseph’s problems began because of his relationship with Jacob, his father. After he brought Jacob a bad report about his brothers, they realized he loved Joseph “more than any of them.” As a result, “they hated him” and sold him into slavery (Genesis 37).

After Joseph became ruler of Egypt, the brothers (although not recognizing him) had to stand before him to buy food. One of the brothers, Judah, constantly referred to their father. In fact, the word translated “father” is used 13 separate times between verses 18 and 34. Demonstrating his priorities, Joseph’s first words after revealing his identity were, “Is my father still living?” (Genesis 45:3) He still cared deeply about Jacob.

This story helps us see how important fathers are to their children. But it also helps us think about the Fatherhood of God and how we act toward Him as our Heavenly Father. Many are like Joseph’s brothers—focused only on pleasing themselves. Blind to God’s will, they’re not concerned about breaking His heart or disappointing Him.

But others realize that God is our Father. This changes their attitudes as they realize how much He loves us and wants to bless and provide for us. Their hearts overflow with gratitude. Instead of resisting Him, they are eager to please and serve Him.

Today, remember that God is your Father. Spend time alone with Him. Talk with Him. Seek to develop a more intimate relationship with Him. Instead of fighting Him and resisting His purposes, make sure to cooperate with His plans.

Willingly obey His Word. Desire to please Him and bring joy to His heart. Be confident that, as your Father, He loves you and wants to carry out His wonderful plan for your life.
