The Father’s Love

Born in Spain in 348 AD, Aurelius Prudentius became a lawyer, a judge, and then provincial governor. But, as a devoted Believer, he gave up these careers to devote himself to serving God.

He also wrote many poems, and in one he expressed what God had shown him about Jesus’ birth. The poem has become known in English as “Of the Father’s Love Begotten.” Today, many churches still sing the hymn that was based on this poem.

Prudentius wrote, “Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!”

He described how at Jesus’ words, “The worlds were framèd; He commanded; it was done.” Having died and fulfilled prophesy, now all creation praises Him: “O ye heights of heaven adore Him; angel hosts, His praises sing; powers, dominions, bow before Him, and extol our God and King! Let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert sing, evermore and evermore!”

Prudentius ended this poem with praise: “Christ, to Thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to Thee, Hymn and chant with high thanksgiving, and unwearied praises be: Honor, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory, evermore and evermore!”

During this Christmas season, many just think of the baby Jesus. Remember: He came to earth because of God’s love for you. In your heart, remember that He is the Source—the Beginning and the End. Praise Him!
