God’s Refining Process

It was a horrible time for many people. In fact, it was called the “Panic of 1857.” A major finance company collapsed, and many businesses failed. The public’s confidence throughout the U.S. was shaken. Grain prices fell, and British investors removed funds from U.S. banks.

A spirit of despair and fear spread throughout the land. The problems seemed monumental, and many felt hopeless. But young John D. Rockefeller Sr. had a very different perspective. His surprising reaction: “What a school—the school of adversity and stress—to train a boy in!”

This positive attitude was shaped by his Christian upbringing, his faithful attendance at church, and his commitment to Bible reading and prayer. He had become highly disciplined. His dedication to hard work would make him one of the most successful businessmen in history. He refused to waste his time wallowing in panic.

The Bible encourages us to trust in God at all times, confident that He “causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

We must remember that He may allow us to be “tested by fire.” Why? Because He loves us (Hebrews 12:6). And we are to “consider it all joy” when we encounter trials. Why? Because God is working to prepare us, that we may be “perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4).

In your life, remember that God is with you in every situation and every trial. Ask Him what He is accomplishing through your current circumstances. Have faith in Him. He is refining, perfecting, and preparing you for greater things to come.
