Trustworthy

What thoughts must have run through the mind of the warden! He was a man with enormous responsibilities and pressures…always concerned about the political environment…dedicated to pleasing Pharaoh and others in authority…and always worried about his prisoners. Day after day, the worries must have mounted.

But everything changed when Joseph became a prisoner. We can imagine how other prisoners mostly were concerned about themselves, perhaps hoping the warden would use his influence for their advantage. But Joseph was different. He was honest and completely trustworthy. Instead of being self-serving or self-centered, he was ready to serve, even when wrongfully imprisoned.

The warden became so confident in Joseph that he put him “in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.” This must have been a highly unusual decision, considered controversial and risky. But the plan worked. In fact, he “had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything.”

Joseph provides the ideal model for Believers, for God calls us to be people that others can trust. And He calls us to be servants. As Jesus taught, we are not to clamor for position or power. Instead, “whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26), and “the greatest among you must be a servant” (Matthew 23:11).

Through the life of Joseph, we see just how powerful it is to be trustworthy and dependable. These were rare qualities in Joseph’s time, just as they are today.

If you want to impact others, ask God to help you have the attitude of a servant and to be a person that others can trust. Be dependable and faithful, and seek first His Kingdom.
