Priorities

The influential 18th century scholar, Samuel Johnson, once observed, “Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.” For similar reasons, special credibility is given to deathbed confessions. At these moments, people tend to tell the truth and have a clarified understanding of their priorities.

Applying this principle to “the end of all things,” Peter focused on practical matters. He was concerned about the thoughts of his readers, and warned them about dwelling on the wrong things or being easily swayed by influences around them. He urged them to be under control and to have calm minds; not to give in to rumors, gossip, or speculation.

This was imperative, because Peter wanted them to focus on the importance of prayer, and they could not pray effectively if their minds were cluttered or distracted.

Peter also expressed concern for the relationships of Believers. “Above all,” they were to love each other, “because love covers a multitude of sins.” This love was not to be superficial, but deep and constant.

In this same spirit, Believers were to be hospitable to everyone, even to those they did not know well or with whom they disagreed. They were to have a servant’s attitude and be “good stewards” (v. 10). They were to be humble, never proud.

Finally, Peter wanted them to remember that they represented God. They were to maintain His standards and bring glory to Him (v. 11).

Today, as you approach the end of one year and the beginning of the next, ask God to give you His perspective on your life. Seek to have His priorities, and serve Him faithfully.
