Worldly Wisdom

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

In 1966, as his administration faced mounting problems, President Lyndon Johnson called together a group of men who were recognized for their knowledge and experience. This group became known as “the Wise Men.” These men often agreed, and recommended strategies that were effective. However, at other times they disagreed or gave ineffective advice.

In their book about these men, Walter Isaacson and Evan Thomas wrote that “history will bestow a mixed judgment on what they bequeathed.” While at times they demonstrated wisdom, in retrospect it seems clear that as individuals and as a group, they also could be guilty of folly.

This mirrors the stories of wise men and women throughout history. Even the most brilliant people have flaws. Even those who make memorable contributions are fallible human beings.

The Bible encourages us to remember the limits of human wisdom. We can work to discover knowledge and information, but Ecclesiastes says this pursuit is like chasing the wind. No scholar or scientist can know enough. No historian can read enough books. No psychologist or sociologist can grasp all that needs to be known.

Today, remember that God is the source of all wisdom. He is the Creator, and He already has declared “the end from the beginning” (Isaiah 46:10).

If you want wisdom, seek Him with your whole heart. Study His Word. Spend time with Him in prayer. Do not place your hope in worldly wisdom. Cry out to God, and ask Him to give you His wisdom.
