Temporary Victories

Daily Devotional•3 Minutes

Do you mistake a single win for the end of the battle? In Matthew 22, Jesus silenced His critics—without any illusion the war was over.

“No one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions” (Matthew 22:46).

Jesus answered the Pharisees, then the Sadducees. He knew exactly how to respond. Then “when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together” (v. 34). Out of this group, a lawyer emerged to challenge Him—without success.

In every case, Jesus’ answers dazzled His attackers. His responses were so brilliant that no one dared to “ask him any more questions.” But this didn’t mean they were convinced or that He’d won them over. Their opposition actually remained just as strong.

We can imagine how His disciples might have concluded that Jesus had won a victory. Yes, He’d silenced His critics for the moment, but He wasn’t under any illusion: He knew they’d simply shift tactics and wait for another day, another opportunity. Jesus knew the reality of the spiritual battle that was taking place. His destiny was to go to the cross to die for our sins, winning the ultimate victory.

In our spiritual lives, it’s important that we have Jesus’ kind of long-term view. With God’s help, we can win short-term victories. He may even perform miracles, change the hearts of our attackers, or open their eyes to the truth. But we never can forget the spiritual war that is going on. We must press on toward the final victory.

Don’t become distracted by the temporary things of this world. Stay focused on the big picture. Seek to fulfill God’s call on your life.

Reflection Question: Describe a time God gave you the right words to say when you needed them.

Frequently Asked Questions

If Jesus silenced His critics, why did opposition to Him continue?

Being unable to answer Him publicly didn’t mean His opponents’ hearts changed—Matthew 22:46 notes they stopped asking questions, not that they stopped opposing Him.

How do I keep a “long-term view” when I win a short-term spiritual battle?

Recognize that resolving one conflict, conversation, or argument doesn’t end all opposition; stay anchored in your larger purpose rather than treating any single win as final.

Does this mean I shouldn’t feel encouraged by small wins?

Not at all—the devotional encourages recognizing God’s help in the moment while staying aware that spiritual growth and mission are ongoing, not finished at any one victory.
