How seriously do you take the holiness of God? When Uzzah touched the ark, Israel learned that reverence means doing God’s work God’s way.

“David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets” (1 Chronicles 13:8).

It was a time of celebration! The Ark of the Covenant, which had been captured by the Philistines, was coming home! Reverently, the Ark was placed on a cart, and the journey began.

But as they travelled, a man named Uzzah “put out his hand to take hold of the ark” and keep it from falling (v. 9). Acting with good intentions, Uzzah didn’t realize he was violating a sacred command of God’s Word. As a result, he was struck down. David could not understand God’s action, and he became afraid. He took the Ark to a nearby house, where it remained for three months.

Finally, David decided to try again to bring the Ark home. Realizing the reasons for God’s action against Uzzah, he had gained a new understanding of holiness. He called the priests and Levites, gave them clear instructions, and consecrated them to transport the Ark. David reminded them that God had been angry against Uzzah because “we did not seek him according to the rule” (15:13).

This time, the Ark was returned successfully to Jerusalem. Israel had learned a painful lesson. They realized that God is holy, His Word always is true, and we cannot take Him for granted.

God is a God of mercy and grace, but He also is holy and righteous. Stay humble before Him. Know His Word, and be aware of what you should and should not do.
