What reminds you that God keeps His promises? After the flood He set a rainbow in the sky—the first of many signs of His faithfulness.

“This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud … I will remember my covenant” (Genesis 9:12–15).

The Bible is filled with reminders—altars where commitments and agreements were made, signposts that commemorate important events, triggers that warn us and help us recall fundamental truths, recurring events that remind us of God’s promises and what He’s done for us. God Himself provided the very first of these signs: the rainbow to remind Him of His own covenant promises.

While places and things often were important signs, God also used the calendar. In the same way that we mark the calendar to honor people on birthdays and anniversaries, certain days are important to God—set aside to cause His people to think and remember.
