When Power Is Built on Pride

Ambition fueled by pride may look successful for a season, but when power is built on pride, God’s justice always has the final word.

“Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech” (Judges 9:56).

In many ways, Abimelech resembles a modern politician or an ambitious business tycoon. To fulfill his ambition of becoming the leader of Shechem, he made promises, reminding its people that Gideon was his father. Then he hired “worthless and reckless fellows” to murder his 70 brothers (v. 4). Having ruthlessly eliminated the opposition, Abimelech was crowned king.

But his youngest brother, Jotham, escaped and challenged the people to consider Abimelech’s promises and character.

Abimelech and his men defeated Gaal and destroyed Shechem, then destroyed the town of Thebez. There, he was hit on the head by a millstone dropped by a woman. Abimelech had a servant kill him, so they couldn’t say, “A woman killed him” (v. 54).

Many people today act just like Abimelech. They crave power and are willing to do anything to achieve their goals. Such people may appear to succeed, but eventually they reap what they sow.

Remember this when you look at worldly people. Some may seem able to fool others or make short-term gains. But God sees our hearts and our real motives. Only He offers real hope. Only He can solve our problems and provide the answers we need.

Seek to please Him with your attitude, words, and deeds. Ask Him to help you be a faithful servant, and seek first His Kingdom.
