“But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD” (Jonah 1:3).

Many throughout the world were shocked when Malcolm Muggeridge gave his life to Christ. He became famous in the 1940s as a writer and television personality noted for his cynicism. His personal life was characterized by drinking and womanizing.

But late in life, Muggeridge discovered the reality of faith in Jesus Christ. He learned that none of us can escape from God. He wrote, “I am driven to the conclusion that God wants me. God comes padding after me like a Hound of Heaven.”

Jonah learned a similar lesson. When God told him to go to Ninevah, he ran away, thinking he could escape God’s presence. Nineveh was to the east and required a journey over land. Instead, Jonah set out by ship for Tarshish—entirely the opposite direction.

Yet Jonah discovered that it’s impossible to hide from God. Jonah also discovered that God knew him better than he knew himself. The wrong turn was running from God. The right turn was obeying Him.

Don’t fight God or try to run from Him. His ways may be different than what you want to do. But remember that He’s your Creator and that He has a plan just for you—the right plan!

He knows you better than you know yourself. You can find fulfillment only as you trust in Him … follow Him … surrender to Him … and obey Him.
