Seven Washings

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Seven Washings tells how Naaman’s pride nearly kept him from healing, yet the muddy Jordan became the place where faith brought cleansing.

“Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, ‘Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.’ But Naaman was angry and went away.”—2 Kings 5:10–11

Naaman was a “great man” and “a mighty man of valor” (v. 1), but there was a problem: He had leprosy. In his desperation, he learned from a servant girl that there was a prophet in Israel who would be able to help.

When Naaman finally went to see Elisha, the prophet was not even willing to meet with him. He sent a servant instead—with the surprising message that Naaman was to “wash in the Jordan seven times, and [his] flesh shall be restored” (v. 10).

This made no sense. Naaman thought Elisha would “wave his hand” and heal him. “He turned and went away in a rage” (vs. 11–12).

But Naaman’s servants convinced him to change his mind. When he obeyed, he was healed instantly, and his life turned around. He could not influence God with his money, prestige, or reputation. What moved God was his humility and obedience—his faith.

The Bible tells us that “without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). Today, God is ready to reward you … if you will lay aside pride, if you will obey Him and act in faith, and if you will trust Him completely. Don’t let anything hold you back. Reach out to God and believe Him for miracles!

Reflection Question: What step of obedience might open your healing?

Prayer
