Knowing God Personally

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

What delights God is not riches or power but knowing Him personally and seeking deeper understanding of His heart and Word.

“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom … the rich man boast in his riches; but let him who boasts boast … that he understands and knows me … for in these things I delight.”—Jeremiah 9:23–24

What is important to God is not a person’s possessions, prestige, knowledge, or power, but what they boast about. God is interested in these things that reveal our true character and what is important to us.

God specifically named two priorities that “delight” Him: (1) understanding Him and (2) knowing Him. He’s seeking people who treasure His Word, cooperate with Him, desire to know Him intimately, and live according to His principles.

If we focus on ourselves and boast of our own accomplishments, we cannot have the correct perspective on life or an intimate relationship with God. Worldly things can occupy our hearts and keep us from knowing Him.

The Lord wants us to understand His nature and know Him for who He is. As Jesus said, we need to seek first His Kingdom, deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him (Matthew 6:33; Luke 9:23).

What is the boast of your life? What do you praise? What shines out when people look at you?

Seek to be a faithful witness to the truth of the Gospel. Remember that God cares about your heart, your attitude, and your true character. If you want Him to delight in you, crave to know Him more personally and intimately. Pursue more understanding of Him and His Word. May this be your passion … your goal … your top priority.

Reflection Question: What steps can you take to know God more personally this week?
