False Accusations

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Paul’s arrest reminds us that false accusations may come, but God can use even injustices to advance His purposes when we remain faithful.

“When the seven days were almost over, the Jews … seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd … Then the whole city was provoked and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out.”—Acts 21:27–30 NASB

Some in Jerusalem were not interested in facts or fairness. From the moment Paul arrived, they were determined to silence him and prevent the Gospel from spreading.

Paul sought to answer these critics and prove that he was “keeping the Law.” He purified himself and paid the expenses of four men who had a “vow upon themselves” (vs. 23–24). But when he entered the Temple, his critics claimed that Paul was accompanied by Trophimus, a Gentile.

Instead of checking the facts, the crowds assumed the rumor was true. Word quickly spread that Paul had “defiled this holy place” (v. 28). A riot engulfed the city, Paul was beaten and arrested, and his attackers thought they had won. But he remained faithful, and God used these attacks to accomplish His purposes.

This story demonstrates how easily crowds can be manipulated. It also shows how even the best-intentioned actions can be misinterpreted, particularly by people who have predetermined biases.

Today, many in the world want to cripple the Gospel and silence Christians who witness, discredit those who serve God, and cast suspicion on ministers and anyone who takes a stand for truth.

Be ready to face these kinds of attacks. Fill your heart and mind with God’s Word. Be strong in the Holy Spirit. And no matter what happens, continue to be faithful to your call.

Reflection Question: How will I respond when others misjudge or misrepresent me?
