Kingdom Prayer

We’ve been taking time to learn what it is to live in the ways of the kingdom of God. And there are many ways. There’s no way to that we could cover all of them through this series and through this time together but I’m just sharing a few things here and there that I believe will strengthen your walk and help you to accomplish things that you haven’t been able to accomplish.

One key thing about the kingdom of God is that it’s all about relationship. It’s the relationship of a Father and a Son. And one thing that we see and we recognize in Scripture was that any time that Jesus went into a thing called prayer, He would come out and there would be this demonstration of power. And finally the disciples said, “We want to learn that thing that You do when You slip away and You’re with the Father in communication with Him and You just come back and things happen. Signs happen. Wonders happen. Miracles happen.” It’s because the intimacy that we have with God will always birth power. And what we do in the secret place is always going to be rewarded openly.

The one thing I’ve discovered as a leader of congregations for many years is that many people struggle with prayer. But it is the most important thing we could ever do. As a matter of fact, as we’ve kind of paralleled this series with the book of Acts and the development of the church, one thing we learn about the church in Acts is that they were full of power because they were full of prayer. And prayer is something we should always do. I know if I was a believer back in that time, I don’t think I would have asked Jesus to teach me how to pray. I would have probably said “Teach me how to walk on water. Teach me how to turn two fish and five loaves into feeding five thousand,” and things like that.

But they said, because they observed something very key, “teach us to pray.” In Matthew the sixth chapter, the tenth through the thirteenth verse, we see Jesus teaching them to pray. And He says, “When you pray, pray like this ‘Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses and forgive those who trespass against us. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever.”

The most important part about that is your approach to God. Your approach to God can change everything that comes out of your prayer life. They saw Him as “Our Father who art in heaven.” They hallowed Him because of the greatness and because of the reverence they had for Him. And then they moved into a place not where they were begging and not where they were pleading – which is what many people do in prayer – but they made a decree. They said, “Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

We could go through the entire prayer but we don’t have time for that. But I’m telling you now, when you grasp the understanding of approaching God the right way and when you grasp the understanding that I can decree for the kingdom of heaven to come and the will of God to be done in every aspect of my life. If it’s finances, I can say kingdom of God, let the financial ways of God come into my finances; in my body; in my relationships; in my family; my job; my business. Whatever I do, I can say kingdom of God, come into those things because this kingdom again is a supernatural kingdom. And it carries ways and means that are far beyond the natural way of living and the natural things that people see.

So we pray, “Thy kingdom come.” Your will. Your rule. Your reign. Your sovereignty. Bring that into my life. Bring it into the matters of my life. And we’ll see from that the great things manifest and the power of God would be revealed through your life and in the matters of your life.
