A Time to Be Grateful

At this time of year as people across America celebrate Thanksgiving, it is good to take account of all we have to be grateful for in this life.

Soon after becoming president, George Washington called for a “day of public thanksgiving and prayer …”

That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war.

Washington also expressed gratitude for the peace that had come to the land after being at war for so many years. He gave thanksgiving:

For the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed.

The first official Thanksgiving in America was proclaimed by President Lincoln during the Civil War in 1863 for the purpose of expressing gratitude after the victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg that had helped to turn the tide of the war.

As we approach the end of this year, I pray God will give peace to you and your family as you take stock of His blessings in your lives.

May this be a time of celebration as you gather with loved ones to give thanks to God. I wish you a happy Thanksgiving!
