National Day of Prayer

David CerulloBy David Cerullo2 Minutes

This past year has been a time like we have rarely seen in our history – and yet God has remained faithful to His people. We have faced major challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic, political upheaval, and an economic downturn. Yet despite these difficulties, we know that God is a loving Father who is watching over His children.

This year, the National Day of Prayer means more than it ever has before. As we gather to pray, let us be reminded of this vital Biblical promise:

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV).

In 1775, the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. Since that time, official calls to prayer have continued through our history. In 1863, in the midst of the dark days of the Civil War, President Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer.”

In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, established an annual national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.

To find a prayer site in your community, log on to the official National Day of Prayer website at nationaldayofprayer.org/events.

As we pray for our nation, let us remember God’s promise from Habakkuk 2:14, “for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”

May God bless you and your family as you intercede for America on this National Day of Prayer.

Your Friend,

David Cerullo
