Lift Your Voice in Praise to the King

Lift Your Voice in Praise to the King invites you to join all creation in lifting your voice to the King, echoing the timeless praise inspired by Psalm 98.

What does shouting joyfully sound like? What does it mean to sing for joy? If we went back in time, we might be surprised to hear the sounds of ages past. Much of the color, variety, and energy we associate with music is the result of the innovative contributions of Perotinus Magnus, or simply Pérotin. Born in France around 1160, he dedicated his life to writing and arranging church music.

Pérotin is known as the first person to compose music for three and four different voice combinations. He created a rich sound that transformed church music and music history.

One of Pérotin’s most enduring works was written in 1198 for Christmas celebrations. Inspired by Psalm 98, it was called Viderunt Omnes. In English, the words are simple and direct: “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Rejoice in the Lord, all lands. The Lord has made known His salvation; in the sight of the nations He has revealed His righteousness.”

As in all generations, the music of today reflects our times. Certain forms, sounds, and words give voice to what is in our hearts. But the life of Pérotin reminds us of those who helped shape our traditions and pave the way.

As Pérotin helped people of his time to “shout joyfully before the King,” we, too, need to “sing together for joy.” Lift your voice to give God praise!
