The Salt of the Earth

A quiet man who never desired the limelight, John Calvin nevertheless caused shockwaves. Although describing himself as just a “poor timid scholar,” he changed the course of nations.

Born on this day in 1509, Calvin was a serious student whose life was transformed after grappling with ideas developed by Martin Luther. His eyes were opened to the power of God’s Word and a vital faith. After receiving a law degree, Calvin was forced to flee from France after church officials opposed his thoughts. In exile, he focused on Bible study.

In 1536, he arrived in Geneva, Switzerland, intending to visit just one day, but was invited to help organize the city’s government. After two years, he was asked to leave, but he returned three years later, remaining in Geneva until his death.

Based on his study of the Bible, Calvin believed that Christians have an obligation to become involved in their country. These ideas inspired Christians throughout Europe and helped shape the ideals of the early United States. In fact, one study concluded that more than 80 percent of American Christians in the colonial period were strongly influenced by his teachings.

Today, many Christians see problems but don’t want to get involved. Calvin would remind us that we are called to be the salt of the earth. Be serious about your God-given responsibilities. Pray for your country and its leaders. Vote. As God leads you, get involved.
