Are you wondering how to have an intimate relationship with God? It starts with prayer.

Do You Want an Intimate Relationship with God?

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries5 Minutes

If you’ve ever wondered how to have an intimate relationship with God, you’re not alone. Many believers long for closeness with Him—but feel stuck in surface-level prayer. This article explores how intimacy with God grows, why persistence matters, and how a deeper prayer life transforms your relationship with Him.

Do You Want an Intimate Relationship with God?

Many believers sincerely want a closer relationship with God—but feel frustrated by how distant prayer can sometimes feel.

We pray. We ask. Then we move on. And somewhere along the way, prayer begins to feel rushed, shallow, or transactional. We don’t stop to hear Him … or stay to build a relationship.

But intimacy with God was never meant to be fast or convenient. Like any meaningful relationship, it grows through time, presence, and persistence.

If you’re longing to know how to have an intimate relationship with God, the journey begins by rethinking how we approach prayer.

The Problem: Treating Prayer Like a Drive-Through

Too often, prayer becomes something we squeeze into our schedule rather than a place we dwell. We bring God our requests, hope for quick answers, and move on—almost like placing an order and expecting immediate results. But prayer isn’t a transaction; it’s a relationship.

You can’t grow close to someone simply by thinking about them. We build intimacy through conversation, listening, and shared time. The same is true with God.

Why Persistence Matters in Prayer

In prayer, we have to keep coming back—to be persistent in how we seek Him. Jesus addressed this struggle directly in Luke 18, when He told the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge.

The widow keeps coming back—again and again—until justice is granted. Jesus wasn’t comparing God to an uncaring judge. He was teaching us something deeper: Don’t give up when answers don’t come immediately.

“Will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily …” (Luke 18:7-8)

God is not reluctant or unwilling. He is loving. But intimacy grows when we keep showing up. Persistent prayer is not about wearing God down. Instead, it’s about drawing near, trusting Him, and remaining in His presence even when answers take time.

What Intimacy with God Really Looks Like

An intimate relationship with God isn’t built on perfection or eloquence. It’s built on consistency and honesty. Intimacy grows when we:

  • Spend time with God beyond emergencies
  • Learn to listen, not just speak
  • Stay present even when prayer feels quiet
  • Allow God to shape us—not just solve problems

This kind of prayer doesn’t stay shallow. It changes us.

How to Build a Healthy, Deeper Prayer Life

If you want to deepen your prayer life, here are a few practical steps to begin:

  1. Make Space, Not Just Time

Prayer thrives when it’s unhurried. Even short moments become powerful when we’re fully present.

  1. Show Up Honestly

God isn’t impressed by polished prayers. He invites honesty—questions, frustration, gratitude, and surrender.

  1. Stay When It’s Quiet

Some of the deepest intimacy with God is formed when nothing seems to be happening. Don’t rush away.

  1. Pray Scripture

Let God’s Word guide your prayers. Scripture anchors us when emotions waver.

  1. Keep Coming Back

Intimacy is built through return. Day after day. Moment after moment.

This is the kind of prayer Jesus described—bold, persistent, faith-filled, and deeply relational.

Prayer That Changes Lives Starts with Relationship

God invites you into more than surface faith. He desires closeness, trust, and ongoing communion.

An intimate relationship with God doesn’t develop overnight—but it does grow every time you choose to meet Him in prayer.
