Your Heart

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In “Your Heart,” we see how divided loyalty led to downfall, reminding us that God values wholehearted devotion over outward success.

“He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, only not wholeheartedly […] From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish.”2 Chronicles 25:2, 27 NASB

What kind of man did God want to be the king of Israel? People tend to look for good looks, experience, or being articulate.

But God has completely different standards. He “does not see as man sees; since man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). God chose David to be king even though his family didn’t consider him worthy. David’s heart was right before God, and that’s what mattered.

Several generations later, David’s descendant Amaziah became king. Initially, he “did what was right in the sight of the LORD.”

But Amaziah did not have “a whole heart” (ESV). With divided loyalties, he fell into sin because his heart was not “perfect or blameless” (AMPC). Without a complete commitment to God, he eventually drifted toward evil and away from Him.

Jesus taught us to guard the condition of our hearts: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (Matthew 5:8). And “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

What is the condition of your heart? Do you have divided loyalties, or are you committed to seeking and serving God with your whole being? Commit your life to Him without reservation.

Reflection Question: Is your heart fully committed to following God today?
