Your Gift, Your Role

Imagine being an acclaimed musician. A man with tremendous skills. A visionary. An honored composer. A skilled violinist and accomplished writer. A man with great musical instincts.

This is the story of Leopold Mozart, who was born on this day in 1719. But the legacy left by Leopold was different than he might have imagined or hoped. In fact, today, he is remembered for few of his personal achievements, and almost exclusively as the father of Wolfgang Mozart, one of the undisputed geniuses of history.

Leopold clearly was not perfect, but did have the sense to recognize that his son had unusual talent. (He also had a daughter, Nannerl, who had her own amazing skills.)

He exposed Wolfgang to influential people throughout Europe. He gave him the opportunity to perform and demonstrate his brilliance. He promoted Wolfgang. He provided a nurturing environment in which Wolfgang could develop his skills. Ultimately, he also somewhat helped to drive Wolfgang away, the son resenting the way his father attempted to control his life.

One thing we know. We would not have had Wolfgang if it weren’t for Leopold. Not just the genetic link, but also the musical skills and development.

The Bible reminds us that there are many ways we can influence others. Many ways we can fulfill the call of God on our lives. Many ways to serve Him. Many kinds of gifts and callings. But only one right calling for you.

Not everyone is called to be in the limelight. Some, like Leopold, may be called ultimately to the background. As teachers and encouragers. Even as parents or friends.

What is God’s calling on you? Be ready to serve Him in whatever way you are called.
