Ready to Serve Faithfully

“The city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few and the houses were not built.” – Nehemiah 7:4 NASB

When the Jews returned to their homeland from exile, they discovered that these lands had been settled by other peoples who felt that these lands had become theirs. As the resettlement continued, many Jews certainly had a preference for where they would live, whether in the traditional family locations or in places that were attractive.

But their leaders had a broader view. They had to consider the entire nation. In particular, they faced the specific need to resettle Jerusalem. They realized that “the city was large and spacious” while “the people in it were few and the houses were not built.” Something had to be done.

A census was conducted of all those who returned from exile, and lived in the land. This confirmed that too few people lived in Jerusalem. It was determined that the best way to address this problem was to cast lots. If the people would not voluntarily settle in Jerusalem, some, chosen at random, would be forced to relocate.

Many must have resisted this move. But some agreed willingly. And the Bible reports that “the people blessed all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.”

Through this example, we see how God’s people need to be submitted to Him and do whatever He asks. To go wherever He wants. To serve in any way He calls us.

Today, make sure you remember these principles. Remember that you are a unique creature, designed by God. And that you have a unique calling. That you have unique gifts and talents, and special responsibilities in His Kingdom.

In your life, remember that He is God! Your calling is to serve Him faithfully, to go wherever He calls you. To be willing to lay aside your personal desires and interests. To seek first His Kingdom. Confident that He will bless you for your willingness, obedience, and faithfulness.

Prayer: Father, I commit my life to You. I seek first Your Kingdom. Use me to impact lives with the Gospel. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
