The Wisest of Men

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries3 Minutes

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea . . . magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.’” Matthew 2:1-2 NASB

These magi had received the best of everything. The best training. The best education. They were brilliant men expected to know everything, and possess unusual discernment. Yet these “wise men” became driven by questions. By things greater than themselves.

Studying the skies, they had seen an unusual star and became compelled to follow, filled with uncertainty, yet drawn ever onward. Not knowing their final destination or what exactly they would find. Along the way, they certainly had countless discussions, pondering impenetrable clues.

They followed that star until it drew them to Jerusalem. Here, they must have thought, they surely would find the King they sought. For this was the center for the Jewish people. Yet this was not their final destination.

The star kept moving, until finally it brought them to a place that must have seemed surprising and insignificant. Not a majestic city or a magnificent temple with attendants dressed in robes of splendor. Not to fanfares and parades.

No. The star led them to an ordinary stable in Bethlehem. Questions must have lingered in their minds. Were they sure this was the place—the object for which they had traveled hundreds of miles?

Finally, they realized that the star had stopped, and “rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.” Then, when they saw the baby Jesus, “they fell to the ground and worshiped Him.” And they presented treasures they had brought with them across those many miles.

The story of Jesus’ birth brings us face to face with God’s sovereign power. His timeless plans. We, too, are humbled as we begin to grasp the scope of His wisdom. The depth of His love for us. Something so great not even the wisest can comprehend.

Prayer: Father, I am overwhelmed by Your wisdom. Thank You that I can trust You. Thank You for sending Jesus into this world! In His name. Amen.
