Arguments

“Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights.” 2 Timothy 2:23 NLT

It began as a simple discussion. But, gradually, the words became more heated. Each man became more convinced that he alone was right. Soon, the argument turned violent, and one man took out a gun and actually shot the other! While the victim was expected to recover, the shooter was arrested, charged with “intentional infliction of serious harm” and expected to be sentenced to a lengthy jail term.

Why were they fighting? To prove which was the bigger fan of the eighteenth-century philosopher Immanuel Kant!

Every day, arguments take place throughout the world about many subjects. Some are cordial and friendly. But some become contentious, leading to the breakup of friendships and even marriages. We see this, for example, when Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement “so sharp that they separated” (Acts 15:39).

In some cases one person (or side) actually may be more “correct.” But often disagreements result from different perspectives and personalities. Some people argue over serious problems, while others debate relatively trivial issues.

The Bible urges us to be on guard against these kinds of fights, to be careful about the words we speak, and not to “get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights.”
The Bible also warns that some people simply love to stir up trouble, and have “an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words.” These disputes can lead to “jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions” (1 Timothy 6:4-5).

In your life, ask God to give you discernment about your words. Remember that there is a time to stand, and refuse to compromise. To defend the Gospel and speak out on critical issues. Not to waver in your commitment to truth. But also remember to stay humble before God. Zealous and passionate about your faith but speaking “the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15).

Prayer: Father, help me keep a watch over my words. Convict me of any words I should not have said. Give me Your sensitivity, and help me to impact lives for Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
