Sowing in Good Soil

The state song of Iowa declares that it is “where tall corn grows.” In fact, through its nearly 100,000 farms, Iowa grows more corn than any other state in the US, and more than most entire countries of the world.

There is one major reason for this abundance: Much of Iowa’s land is rich with deep layers of black, fertile topsoil. It is soil where seeds grow to their maximum potential. But, even there, some soil is filled with rocks, thorns, or weeds, while other soil is shallow. Little will grow, even in Iowa, for those sowing into this bad soil.

The same principle is true in our spiritual lives. The fact is that our lives are filled with “seeds.” Every day we have countless opportunities to “sow” seeds from our time, talent, and resources into His Kingdom and the lives of others. But we need to be careful where and how we sow this seed. Jesus said that to reap a harvest from God we need to sow seeds into “good soil.”

In your life, remember that you have a choice about where you sow your “seed.” What you do with your resources and all that God has given you. If you have been sowing seeds but not receiving a harvest, He may be sending you a message: You may need to sow into different soil.

Today, ask God to reveal where He wants you to sow your seeds. Seek to sow into soil that is “good” in His sight. Ask for His insight. Then, faithfully sow your seeds as unto Him, investing in His Kingdom. As you are faithful, the Bible says that He is ready to give you an abundant harvest.
