The Bible calls God a rock over two dozen times. In the Psalms of David alone, King David called God a rock twelve times. In Psalm 18:2 he declared, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

A study of the life of David shows that the fact that he called God his rock is very significant.

David conquered many foes as a victorious warrior and king, but he still called God His rock. He lived a life filled with great courage, strength, and fortitude that even today’s best soldiers would admire, yet he clung to God as his ultimate source. The warrior king David knew that relying on God was not a weakness but a source of great strength.

Why Call God a Rock?

No finite object on earth can completely explain something about our infinite God but it can help us understand God better. When the Bible calls God a rock, it is using a metaphor to tell us something about Him.

The rocks David saw stood powerful, strong, and everlasting. If you visit Israel today, those very rocks still stand. David knew that the many qualities of the desert rocks apply to God, but only with God are those qualities infinite. The rocks will be gone someday, but God is truly everlasting.

God Our Rock

What does it mean for God to be our rock? It means God is our stability in times of trouble. God always remains solid and unchanging. Though the world shakes and crumbles around us, God does not wobble. He stands solid and strong. In Him, we find salvation, not only from our sin but from the everyday troubles of this world. When the world makes us feel stressed, we can pick up a Bible and spend time reading its unchanging truths about God and what He gives us.

We can approach our God in prayer knowing He is our unchanging rock. We can rely on His power, strength, and stability in times of trouble and every day.
